Hey Deb.
Many thanks for getting in touch recently in regards to your results. It's natural to have lots of questions when reviewing the valuable insights included in an ethnicity estimate. We understand that such results can prove surprising at times so will do all we can to support you at any stage of this journey into your family history.
Rest assured that it is normal to see differences in ethnicity estimates between family members as each set of results is unique due to the random nature of genetic inheritance. Much like physical traits such as eye/hair colour, the markers you receive from your parents and past generations are completely random. This often causes understandable confusion to arise as a parent expects their child's estimate to match their own or a child expects to see an equal split between parents inherited ethnicities. However, while we each inherit 50% of our DNA from our biological father and 50% from our mother, we do not get an equal 50/50 split of all of our parents’ DNA.
As such, your results are unique to you and represent our findings when comparing your DNA to our reference panel. We have put together a handy guide which explains how this determines the results you receive which you can review below.

We hope this provides some clarity on this subject but please feel free to contact us again anytime you need a little assistance. We'd also recommend keeping the two guides linked below close by as you review your results as these provide useful tips on how to make the most from all aspects of your test results.
Thanks again and best of luck in all your research!
