Hey Deb.

Many thanks for getting in touch recently in regards to your results. It's natural to have lots of questions when reviewing the valuable insights included in an ethnicity estimate. We understand that such results can prove surprising at times so will do all we can to support you at any stage of this journey into your family history.

Rest assured that it is normal to see differences in ethnicity estimates between family members as each set of results is unique due to the random nature of genetic inheritance. Much like physical traits such as eye/hair colour, the markers you receive from your parents and past generations are completely random. This often causes understandable confusion to arise as a parent expects their child's estimate to match their own or a child expects to see an equal split between parents inherited ethnicities. However, while we each inherit 50% of our DNA from our biological father and 50% from our mother, we do not get an equal 50/50 split of all of our parents’ DNA.

As such, your results are unique to you and represent our findings when comparing your DNA to our reference panel. We have put together a handy guide which explains how this determines the results you receive which you can review below.

https://support.ancestry.com.au/s/article/Understanding-Inheritance

We hope this provides some clarity on this subject but please feel free to contact us again anytime you need a little assistance. We'd also recommend keeping the two guides linked below close by as you review your results as these provide useful tips on how to make the most from all aspects of your test results.

Thanks again and best of luck in all your research!

The results were not very helpful

The results were not very helpful. We paid for traits and could agree or disagree with some but others, such as a liking for cilantro did not allow me to disagree, which I would do because the very smell makes me ill. Also there was limited information available for a limited time unless you paid a subscription for more, this was not made clear when we originally paid, we thought that we were paying for a full service. During the testing process emails were sent with connections that did not work. This was conveyed by email back to Ancestry but there was no response. The ethnic information provided was what I expected to see so no surprises.

I never received a summary on my ancestry. My husband got one to tell him his percentages of Nationality, but I have hunted my mail and I have never received one. I have a match to my son and cousin, but I have no idea the percentage of my heritage.

Hi Lynne and thank you for reaching out to us with this review. We are sorry to hear that you are having difficulty locating your ethnicity estimate and are eager to advise.

you have received your DNA matches, this means you've received your esthnicity estimate too, you just need to locate this section of your results. In order to find your ethnicity results, all you need to do is click on the DNA tab at the top of the page and click on 'Origins' in the drop down menu. This is where you'll find these results. We have linked an article below which has instructions for locating your results.

Not very much info unless you pay for a subscription

I wish I read these reviews before paying for this service. Although the information I received was interesting and not all that surprising, having to pay additional costs to access the online Ancestry features is misleading (and in my opinion, entirely unacceptable). Sure, they have a 'free' trial, but this is just a way to get money from you each month after your 'free' period expires. In hindsight, I wish I had chosen 23andme instead.

Hi there Lynn, and thanks so much for getting in touch with us lately. We're grateful to you for choosing our AncestryDNA test to help you with your family history research. We're happy to learn that you've recently received your results, though we're sorry to learn of any unmet expectations from the service, and we appreciate the opportunity to address your concerns today.

We're grateful for the opportunity to confirm that, with AncestryDNA, you're provided with your Ethnicity Estimate as well as DNA matches right off the bat. The Ethnicity Estimate determines the ethnicities you've inherited from your ancestors from both sides of your family over the last 500-1,000 years. The DNA matches will in turn comprise of anyone you share DNA with who has also taken our test. They can range from close family to distant cousins. The test can be a great option when wanting to learn a little about what your DNA has to say about the places your ancestors may have lived, as well as making connections with relatives. While we cannot speak for what other companies offer, we can say that we are a market leader in the field of consumer genomics. We have the largest commercial database of DNA samples, over 25 million, which lets us refine our members results with unrivaled precision. More information on what our AncestryDNA test offers can be found below for reference.

In addition to our DNA testing service as outlined above, Ancestry does also offer a subscription service, which will offer access to the historical records we host, public family trees without the need for an invitation, as well as some really great Inheritance tools that can be a great way to work with your Matches and work out your relationships. Our memberships are optional and not needed to avail of your DNA Match list or Ethnicity Estimate. They can, however, be a great option when wanting to delve deeper into your family history research. More information on how our site and services can benefit your research, along with the level of access you'll have to our site with, or without a membership can be found below for reference.

User Friendly Support Staff

The quality of support staff is generally very high. Only had one experience when I was talked over while asking questions & I finished the call with my problem resolved but feeling very annoyed. My recent experience was a far better interaction. A lot of people on Ancestry are older people & Alex handled my query with aplomb. Well done !

Just beginning really

Just beginning really, so I haven't given five stars just yet. My heritage results have been returned, with clear communication/updates every step of the way. Thank you Ancestry :) I was surprised the results came back as quickly as they did, but then not-so-surprised to see the report was brief. I was anticipating a bit more detail, but am nonetheless interested to discover some unexpected ancestral insights alongside verification of anticipated heritage. The ancestry map is a fun visual. I look forward to exploring further online. Overall, I'm quite happy with my investment so far. Thank you :)

After 4 attempts (at least 3 hours on chat hold) at Ancestry support I found a telephone number and it was answered. The idea that a chatbot is support is not good, otherwise a better score could have been given. For the amount that Ancestry charges they should make it easier for people to speak to humans for support. Solution I suggested for a problem was followed and the outcome looks good.

I am adopted. My bio dad isn’t who I was told it was

I am adopted and ordered a DNA test when I found out my biological father died. I had built a relationship with some of his family members over 20 years. I was going to have him added to my birth certificate as part of the adoption redress scheme. Well he’s not my biological father. My biological father is in ancestry and I matched with him. My birth mother had lied. I should have expected this. She never had a father on my birth certificate but left identifying information about a man knowing he wasn’t the father. How was experience, a deep shock and anger, but at least I know the truth

ISSUES ON ANCESTRY.au

Monthly for 18 years I have subscribed to Ancestry.au. Having paid thousands of dollars over those many years, one would expect a service to be at least 95 percent near perfect. So, I am tired of the work I put into building my family not being saved and having to go back and repeat the searches and enter the details again. Over and over and over again! Also today I have not been able to review any of the hints suggested. To say I am frustrated .... is correct and then some.

Hi Annie! We'd like to start by thanking you for your extended period of loyalty to Ancestry, we really appreciate our long-term members like you. We're sorry to hear that you've been experiencing technical issues but we'd love to help with those in any way we can.

The issues you're experiencing sound similar to issues that we have seen resolved in the past by troubleshooting related to the browser/device that's being used to browse Ancestry, so if you have not already tried those troubleshooting steps, we would recommend that you start with those. Bit like a jigsaw puzzle

Loving putting together my family tree. It’s a bit like a jigsaw puzzle and very addictive. Great how Ancestry works away in the background and when you next look into your info, there are more suggestions for you.

Ethnic origins v traits

I'm interested in learning more about my ethnic origins. Ancestry made this possible in a remarkably simple and fairly cost effective way. I was kept well informed every step of the way from receipt of on my sample kit through to the final results.
The information about my traits was of less importance to me as they are fairly self evident.

Disappointed and Not Accurate

I know for a fact that I have family from/in Italy from my Dad back, and it did not show up in the DNA test. I was hoping to connect with more relatives in Italy by doing the DNA test. It's not worth it.

It was amazing

It was amazing. I didn't expect to have had two percent DNA from Cyprus from my mother's side!! I also expected to have some Arab blood from my father's side, but surprisingly I had none!!

I was pleased to get my DNA history.

I was pleased to get my DNA history.
However, I am not interested in contacting 5th cousins and so on.
If you could print me out a family tree going back 5 or 6 generations, or further if it is possible, and send it to me as a family tree in a single email, that is all that I would like.
