About Carmarthenshire and Bangor, Wales, Wills Index Cards, 1885-1941

General collection information

This database is derived from index cards related to wills filed in two Welsh regions. The index entries for the area of Bangor, numbering almost 31,000, are dated between 1885 and 1941, while the 13,000 entries for Carmarthenshire are dated between 1920 and 1941.

The index is alphabetised by last name and provides information about when and where a will was filed, however, the index doesn't include a link to an image or the text of the will.

Using this collection

The Carmarthenshire index may include the following information:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Town or City
  • County
  • Year
  • Probate number
  • The Bangor index may include the following information:

  • Name
  • Parish
  • County
  • Year
  • Probate number
  • The index can be used to learn when and where an ancestor was living near the time of their death, which may lead to other historical records for that person. The index also may lead to the discovery of a copy of the will that may provide the names of other family members and insights into the life of your ancestor.

    Collection in context

The indexes were created by the National Library of Wales, which houses wills filed between 1837 and 1941. This is a secondary source created from information found in wills and probate documents from civic and parish records.

Carmarthenshire is located on the southwestern coast of Wales. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the southeast part of the county that includes the cities of Llanelli and Ammanford became a coal-producing region. The rest of the county was devoted to agriculture.

The city of Bangor is located in county Gwynedd on the northwest coast of Wales. Bangor became a municipal borough in 1883 and it was the educational hub of county Gwynedd. The University College of Bangor was founded in 1884, and the University of Wales was established a decade later when the colleges in Bangor, Aberystwyth, and Cardiff were merged. When the Bangor Pier was opened in 1896, the city became a popular holiday destination.
