Stella (Runkles) Allnutt died 1986 and had possession of a family bible which had the information regarding the birth date of Meary Ann Hopwood . She lived with her daughter Beverly Shipley in Damascus, Maryland. Stella was a descendant of Joseph Hopwood and his second wife Jane Becraft. Mary Ann’s tombstone’s inscription has the date of her death as 15 August 1881. However, she sold property, in 1882 witnessed by her son F. a. bowman. Land Records EPB 26:474.1. MaryMeary Ann Hopwood’s birth was 2 December 1814. The family buried her in Salem Methodist Church Cemetery near Cedar Grove, Montgomery County. [Matilda (Hopwood) Bowman, McConnellsburg, Maryland wrote to her son “Wes” Bowman,Oneida, Illinois on 2 December 1882 and told him her sister was dead.] Mary Ann married, Evan Bowman, the son of Allen and Rebecca (Bedford) Bowman, 1 January 1839. In 1850, Evan and Mary A. Bowman both age 35 are living in the Clarksburg district with sons Francis age 9 and William C. age 7. Ten years later their sons Francis Asbury Bowman and William Columbus were residing with them. The Second District of Montgomery County, in 1870, listed Evan as the head of the household and his wife was Mary Ann. Evan died between 1870 & 1880, at which time Mary Ann was living with her son Francis Asbury Bowman. See Allen Bowman family page 24. [NOTE: Hopwood sisters married Bowman brothers]2. John William Hopwood’s birth was 7 April 1817. I surmise he was the namesake of his grandfathers’ John Hopwood and William Sedwick. John William Hopwood’s death date after 1880. Place of death unknown.3. Matilda E. Hopwood’s birth was 19 October 1819. She married Wilson Bowman the oldest son of Allen and Rebecca (Bedford) Bowman on 5 January 1836. Wilson was the older brother of (page 17)Evan Bowman, the husband of Mary Ann Hopwood. Matilda and Wilson resided in the Rockville District of Montgomery County in 1840 with their oldest child Keziah Jane Bowman born on 23, January 1839. Maryland was the birthplace of the next five children of Matilda and Wilson; Harriet Ann born 30 October 1840, John Wesley born 3 June 1883, Roberta born about 1835 and William born about 1847. In July of 1883, Matilda told her son ( John Wesley) she wanted to go see her old home again and would try to make a trip the first of December. See Bowman family-Wilson Bowman Section.4. Martha Hopwood’s birth year was recorded in the 1850 census as 1825 and in 1850 12 1825. Because she was not mentioned in her father’s will, she died before 1869. Transcription: 1.
