Muslim (mainly Bangladesh and Iran): from the Persian personal name Reza from Arabic riḍā' ‘contentment satisfaction’. This was an attribute of ‘Alī ibn Mūsā (c. 765–818) the eighth imam of the Shiites (from 799) known in Persian as Ali al-Reza and in Arabic as ‘Alī al-Riḍā ‘Ali the Contented’. Reza is also used to form names in combination with other words e.g. Reza ul-Karim (Arabic Riḍā’ al-Karīm) ‘satisfaction of the Most Generous (i.e. Allah)’. Compare Raza and Reda
