English (Kent): habitational name from one or more places named with Old English (ge)mǣnnes ‘land owned in common’ also ‘community’ such as Ewell Minnis in Temple Ewell (Kent recorded as La Mannesse in 1226) The Minnis in the neighbouring parish of River just north of Dover (Kent recorded as Manesse in 1203) and perhaps Rhodes Minnis in Lyminge (Kent).
