Americanized form of Rusyn (from Slovakia) and Slovak Mašlej or Maslej Polish Maślej and probably also of Ukrainian Masliy: derivative of maslo (Polish masło) ‘butter’ applied as an occupational name for a dairyman or perhaps as a nickname (see Maslak ). English: possibly a variant of Mansley with loss of -n- itself perhaps a variant of Munslow a habitational name from Munslow in Shropshire. The placename derives from an uncertain initial element + Old English hlāw ‘mound hill’.
