Czech and Slovak: from kalich ‘chalice’ said to be a nickname for a Protestant. Americanized form of Serbian and Croatian Kalić: probably a patronymic from a pet form of any of the personal names containing the syllable ka or perhaps a topographic name derived from kal ‘mud’.
