Mandarin form of the surname 蒿 meaning ‘artemisia’ in Chinese: from the placename Hao (蒿) the name of a fief (located in present-day Shandong province) in the state of Qi during the Spring and Autumn Period (770–476 BC). variant Romanization of the surname 緱 see Gou Mandarin form of the surname 浩 meaning ‘vast’ in Chinese: (i) traced back to Hao-Sheng Bu Hai (浩生不害) a figure in the state of Qi during the Warring States Period (475–221 BC). (ii) possibly from the Mongolian ethnic group in northern China.
