Czech and Slovak (Hájek); Polish: occupational name for a woodman or topographic name for someone who lived by a thicket or grove from Czech (and Slovak dialect) hájek ‘thicket’ from háj ‘grove’ + the diminutive suffix -ek. It is also found in Germany and Austria where it is spelled Hajek. Czech (Hájek): occupational name for a keeper of animals (a herd) especially one who looked after horses from hájit ‘to protect to defend’.
