Haggard Family History

Haggard Name Meaning

English (Yorkshire): variant of Hawkyard a habitational name from Hawk Yard in Saddleworth (Yorkshire). English: nickname from Middle English Old French hagard ‘wild untamed’. This word was adopted into Middle English as a technical term in falconry to denote a hawk that had been captured and trained when already fully grown rather than being reared in captivity; the surname may have developed as a metonymic occupational name for a falconer. English: possibly also a variant of Agar with prosthetic H- and excrescent -d. Americanized form of Danish Ågård (see Agard ).
