Indian (northern states): Hindu name found in several communities, from Sanskrit deva ‘god’, ‘lord’. This was a title used by ruling families in northern India. There is a Jat tribe called Deo. In the northeast this name is found among Kayasths, pronounced deb. In Maharashtra Konkanasth Brahmans have a clan called Dev. Italian: from a short form of the personal names Amadeo, Laudadeo, or Sperindeo, of which only the first now remains in use as a given name.
