The cloth was typically used to make tapestry wall hangings. In France this is also found as a habitational name from Arras. Scottish: probably a habitatonal name from Airhouse in Channelkirk (Berwickshire) which is recorded as Arous in 1510 Arreis in 1630 and Aras in 1655.
