Japanese: written 蕃良 phonetically but more usually 原 ‘plain’ or ‘field’. It is taken from a placename in Musashi (now Tokyo and Saitama prefectures) and perhaps from other similarly named localities as well as in the Ryūkyū Islands.
Listed in the Shinsen shōjiroku. Some instances in America could be shortened versions of longer names.
