As genetic science continues to advance, AncestryDNA is now able to offer users a better look at where their families originated with increased precision and granularity alongside an updated user experience.
Four Ways to Look at Your Origins
Ancestry uses cutting-edge genetic science to read your DNA and connect you to the people and places around the world that are part of your ancestral origins. You can explore your results in several ways.
- Ancestral regions: This analysis shows a percentage breakdown of your DNA and the places and regions where your ancestors likely lived up to 1,000 years ago. If you’ve been on Ancestry before, you might know these as your “Ethnicity Estimate.”
- Ancestral journeys: This view of your results connects you to the people and places—formerly known as “Communities”—your ancestors were likely a part of in the past 300 years. These journeys can tell the story of where they lived and moved.
- Subregions: This brand-new way to look at your results provides added detail to a person’s results. You could now see smaller, more specific areas within a region. We’re proud to announce 54 new subregions in Europe as part of this year’s update.
- Ethnic groups: This designation reflects communities of people who share common cultural characteristics, such as language, religion, customs, traditions, and often national origin. In this update, we’ve added content representing 64 ethnic groups from many regions in Africa. Members with connections to these regions can find information about ethnic groups, complete with videos, photos, and more, in some of your region results.
The insights you’ll find in the newly designed AncestryDNA experience make it easier for you to explore the places you’re from, dive deeper into your family’s story, and better understand your results.
