Bodenhams in Herefordshire

Hi Jenny

The Bodenham family have been living in Hereford from at least 1462, the they owned and may still own land to the south of the City of Hereford. If you look at you will see an entry for Richard Bodenham, who lived at Rotherwas House. This house does not exist any more and the area is given over to an industrial park, (lots of small factories) called Rotherwas Industrial Park. What still exists though is the family chapel which is owned by British Heritage. If you give me your e-mail address I will, in the next two weeks, get a photo of the place and e-mail it as an attachment to you.

If you visit you will see that the Bodenham family are concentrated around Herefordshire, Gloucestershire and Shropshire. These three counties are on or near the Welsh border, in fact there are several Bodenhams in Wales. If in my research I come across any other references to your family name I will contact you.

Hi Frank
Have you by any chance found any connections to the Bodenham families of Shropshire, namely around Neen Savage, Cleobury Mortimer, Ludlow and Much Wenlock areas?
Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Linda

I have been off line for a number of weeks with a damaged foot and a broken PC so I have not had much time to research the local Bodenham name. I have entered the complete Post Office Directory for Herefordshire 1879 onto a database (9000+entries) this has give the following Bodenham's living in Hereford in 1879

There are 5 entries

Bodenham Frederick ELMHURST, AYLESTONE HILL, HEREFORD solicitor (James Bodenham, clerk of the peace for the city secretary for the Golden Valley railway co. 5 ST PETER ST. HEREFORD
Bodenham miss 1 CASTLE ST. HILL, HEREFORD independent means
Bodenham Charles ROTHERWAS, DINEDOR j p middle name de la barre
Bodenham Benjamin THE FIRS, KINGTON manager of the midland banking co ltd, solicitor commissioner (Bodenham, temple philpin) agent for atlas insurance
Bodenham henry WALFORD farmer shopkeeper

If you think any of these names are worth following up I will look for them in the census. The Bodenham family have lived in Hereford for many centuries, and at Rotherwas just outside Hereford (Now an Industrial Estate) is the Rotherwas Chapel where many Bodenham's are buried. I could try and get you a picture of the place if you want.

If you want me to put your email address and details into my database, (I can then contact you if I come across anything interesting about Bodenham's either from Herefordshire or anywhere in the UK) contact me on

If any body else wants to be included feel free to contact me, my main research area is Herefordshire, England 1770-1945, and newspaper stories from The British Journal1770+, The Hereford Journal 1770+ and the Hereford Times 1832+. I am interested in all names not just Bodenham (though local names such as Bodenham are easier to research and therefore more likely to return a positive result)

My maternal grandfather's mother was Margaret Ann Bodenham and came from somewhere around Hereford (?). She married a Thomas Cook. I think she might have been born (guessing wildly!) around 1850 plus or minus. Is there anyone who might have come across her in their family tree and who might be able to give me any further information on her forbears or, interestingly, present distant cousins???? I live in New Zealand now but do hope somebody can help. Thank you.

I understand the Bodenhams ancient seat was Bryngwyn Manor in the parish of Much Dewchurch but at some time it became secondary to their Rotherwas estate. They were Roman Catholics and paid their fines for being so. My ancestors leased their farms in MuchDewchurch and there are srong indications that some were employed on the Rotherwas estate.

The Bodenham family papers have been deposited in Hereford Record Office and I understand they comprise of nine boxes.

The James Bodenham mentioned was my great grand father. I am now tracing my roots and would be very grateful if you have any further info on this tree.
