Hello Everyone,

I just received a call from Juliette Fulghum Newcomb of Raleigh, N.C. She
is the daughter of James "Dot" Lavoisier Fulghum (born in Valdosta, Georgia,
July 4, 1900) and Elizabeth Swanson Thomas (born April 16, 190l, in Eufala,
Alabama, and died January 12, 1977, in Raleigh, N.C.). "Dot" was a major
league baseball player for the Philadelphia Athletics in 1921 that I posted
about a few weeks ago. She saw my name in the recent FFFNA newsletter and
wanted to respond to my inquiry about "Dot." Juliette indicated that
baseball was very important subject to her father even though he only played
in the major leagues during the 1921 season. "Dot" was the son of Stephen
Fagin Fulghum and Julia Goode. Stephen Fagin Fulghum was a famous building
contractor noted for the Monroe-Sutton house in Valdosta, Georgia, built in
1896 (considered one of the finest examples of Queen Anne style architecture
in the city); the First Baptist Church in Valdosta built in 1899 (considered
to be one of the cities greatest examples of Victorian Eclecticism); and the
First United Methodist Church in Pensacola, Florida, completed in 1910.
Juliette stated that her father, "Dot," was very strong and athletic. She
explained that he was All Southern when he attended Auburn University and
was a member of the SAE Fraternity. Juliette noted that "Dot" got is
nickname as a child because he liked the book "Dot and Her Kittens." The
nickname stuck with him through the years. Juliette stated that, while
attending Auburn, her father met her mother Elizabeth Thomas. Elizabeth was
the daughter of Alabama Court of Appeals Judge E. Perry Thomas and Nell
Pritchett. Interestingly, Juliette noted that her Grandmother Nell's
father, Dr. Edward Hill Pritchett (b: Pittsylvania County, Virginia,
October 7, 1820; d: in Hayneville, Alabama, December 14, 1883), was said to
have been the surgeon for General Robert E. Lee during the Civil War.
Juliette explained that, following his short career in baseball, "Dot"
Fulghum went to work for the General Adjustment Bureau. He died of a
cerebral hemorrhage, while on a business trip in Miami, Florida, on November
11, 1947. "Dot" Fulghum's lineage beginning with Captain Anthony Fulghum is

Do you have photo of James Lavoisier Fulghum? I have photo of Fulghum in baseball uniform and wonder if it is the same person. The time frame fits.
