Looking for information on ancestors/descendants of Ephraim EVELETH (b. 1770, d. bef. 1817). He was born in Lancaster, Worcester Co., MA and married Diana DARLING of Keene, NH on 3-5-1793 in Keene, NH. They had 10 children. I only have information on the youngest, Daniel EVELETH (b. 2-22-1811 in Keene, NH; d. 7-12-1885) who married (Mary?) Hill STEVENS of Biddeford, ME on 9-17-1835 in Concord, MA. They had 5 children before she died and Daniel married Sarah Woodman DAVIS on 2-11-1880.

I have heard that there is a published title, "The Eveleth Family in New England." Would anyone have access to this history or know if this part of the family is referenced? Please reply or e-mail

In the periodical "The New England Historical and Genealogical Register", there is a series of three articles titled "The Eveleth Family of Colonial New England" written by Jonathan B. Butcher. These three articles were published in the Oct 1980, Jan 81, and Apr 81 issues. I have found copies of these on Ebay and at Bibliofind. I glanced through my copies, and they appear to stop with births around 1750. However, they list other sources which go beyond 1750.

There is also a book published in 1930 titled "Four Boston Grandparents: Jones and Hill, Pebble and Eveleth and their Ancestry". I have also found this book at the above sources. I do not currently have a copy of this book (other relatives have borrowed it). There is one for sale on Bibliofind (now owned by Amazon). The asking price is $75. The two copies that I purchased last year were priced more in the $30-$40 range.

Hello Laura. My grandmother, who was born in 1902, was named Laura Leah Eveleth (Leah Carland was her mother). Her father W.S. Eveleth and his father (I am unsure of his name) lived in Corunna, Michigan. W.S.'s father was a lumberman and Eveleth, MN was named after him. He was a decendant of William Sanford Eveleth (d 1819) who was a lieutenant and professor at West Point. He also was a cartographer for the US and created some of the first maps of the northern Michigan area (Mackinac Island, etc.) and helped with the building of Fort Dearborn in Chicago. His maps and documents are at the William Clemens Libraby at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, MI). He died when his ship the Hercules sank in Lake Michigan (the first documented Lake Michigan shipwreck) off the shore of chicago in 1819. I know that the Eveleth's originally came from the East and I appreciate your information about the books.

In 1849 Pieter Luyendyk (in Dutch mostly written as Luijendijk) emigrated to the US. Pieter was born Aug 29, 1823 in Zuid-Beyerland, a village south-west of Rotterdam and married May 7, 1847 in Zuid-Beyerland to Jaapje (probably from 'Jacoba') Maasdam. They emigrated to the US without having children at that time. Nothing was heard from them ever since on this side of the ocean.

A couple of years later, in 1854, Joannes Maasdam, Jaapje's younger brother, went to the States with his wife Maartje (Martha) de Werker and 2 daughters. No news was heard from them either until, during our research last year, we found Joannes' family, 7 generations of them, with over a 100 persons. The Maasdam family in Owasco, Cayuga county changed its name to Marsden. You can read about this extraordinary discovery on the following webpage:

So far we (undersigned and other members of the family interested in genealogy and family history) have been unable to trace any information about Pieter Luyendyk and his wife Jaapje Maasdam.
To what state and town did they go and where did they finally settled; did they have children, grandchildren, what were their activities.....?

Since your family name is also Luyendyk you might be a descendant of Pieter and Jaapje. Maybe you have information that could help us to complete the family tree. At the same time it might add some 4 centuries of family history to your pedigree, since we know the Maasdam family since ± 1500. But above all it would mean a great deal for Margery Marsden and her husband Clayton (now 80) from Butler, Cayuga (NY) who have been doing intensive research to their famly roots since over 30 years.

Your contribution would be greatly appreciated. Even if you are not sure to be a descendant of Pieter and Jaapje, your information could help to find the right track.

What are we looking for? Names (in full), birthdate and place; date and place of death and burial, date and place of marriages of your ancestors to start with.

Be assured that your data will be treated with discretion. Before we will make any publication, we will ask you permission to use the data you sent to me.

I am very much looking forward to hear from you.

Yours sincerely,

Tom de Meyer

I completed a manuscript history of the Eveleth family (to 1970) in 1975. A copy is deposited with the New England Historical Genealogical Society, Boston.

Ephraim Eveleth was born 11 May 1770 in Lancaster, MA, son of Isaac Eveleth and Eunice Hudson. He died in 1815 in Keene, NH. By his wife Diana Darling he appears to have had approximately ten children, but only two seem to have survived:
- William (ca. 1803-1871 of Gray, ME, mar. Emmeline R. Marse
- Daniel (22 Feb. 1811 Keene, NH - 12 July 1885 Chelsea, MA), mar. Mary Hill Stevens.

My neighbor's great great grandfather's name was George Eveleth from Maine or New Hampshire. They believe he was adopted by the Eveleths and his real last name was Braun. George and his sister Hattie worked on the railroad that his father (Eveleth) owned. George married Jesse Groves and had a son--Francis Lovewell (Lowell) Eveleth. We believe he was born in the mid-1800s.

Any additional information on this line would be greatly appreciated.

Sarah Sophia Eveleth b. 15 Jul 1844 in Princeton, MA

James Myrick Eveleth m. 2nd Nancy E. Rugg on 22 Nov 1845 in Princeton, MA. They had the following children, all born in Princeton, MA:

Harriet E. Eveleth b. 29 Jan 1847
Mandana A. Eveleth b. 06 Aug 1848
James Edwin Eveleth b. 15 Feb 1850
