Hello Brian,
From Grolier Encyclopaedia under heading Wrecks and Shipping Disasters.

NETHERBY, emigrant ship, bound for Brisbane, was wrecked at King Island, Bass Strait, 18th July 1866. All (450) were saved and provided for by light-house keepers of Wickham until assistance arrived.

Thank you, Mary. I have 2 stories of the Netherby by people who are descendants of people connected with the tragedy. From those accounts I was able to ascertain that no lives were lost but now I begin the arduous task of verifying whether an ancestor of mine was on the boat. Brian

John Macfarlane aged 22 shown on as a passenger ship Netherby was one of the passengers who continued his journey to Queensland aboard the City of Melbourne. He is shown on the Qld Government assisted immigrant index. Not all passenger continued to qld, many remained in Victoria.

Many thanks for your reply. There is a website for The Netherby Shipwreck 1866 which has the Gazette online.
John McFarlane is listed as both assisted and unassisted on the passenger lists I have researched.
My g/g/father's first child was born in Ballarat, Vic., in 1869 so it gives him enough time to come back to Victoria.
My main interest now is to prove that my John McF is the same as one I have traced through census research online in Shoreditch, Middlesex. This one was born in 1842 so may be a couple of years older than the one listed on the Netherby
