My father has an old oak chest with brass plate with the following inscription:
Umfreville
1736-1746
1803-1838.
Can anyone throw on light on this please?

Whilst researching the name Samuel Umfreville(that of my gt.gt.grandfather)I found reference to a Samuel Umfreville serving on H.M.S Amelia in 1813.(the reference is on a website"Ships of the Old Navy"by Michael Phillips)

Here is a web site about a branch of the Umfrevilles, some of whom were in the navy around about this time:

Ha ha

yes that's my website which I update from time to time. With the advent of all these internet sites more and more Umfrevilles are appearing and supplying information.
