This is a plea for help to anyone with knowledge of the Portis Family of Alabama. I have recently begun the arduous task of investigating my family tree.
My roots go back to the Sumter Co. area of Alabama (Livingston, York,
Gainesville) My family has not kept in touch and many of the folks who
could answer my questions are no longer around. However, I do have a
great-aunt (still with us) who recalls that her great-grandmother was
named Margaret Portis and she was mulatto former slave. The only other
information we have on her is that she was not originally from the Sumter
Co. Alabama area. She told stories of having been sold from one owner to
another. We don't know if Portis is a given name or married name. I have
done several post civil war searches and could not find her other than
the 1870 census where it is possible that she resided in the household of
John W. Portis as a domestic servant age 11 at Suggsville, Al or on the
1920 Census residing with Amos and Emma Brown her daughter and son-in-law
in Sumter Co. Alabama appx 66 yrs. old. I'm am certain that the Margret Portis in the 1920
census is my great-great-great grandmother. However, if you have any
information on the Margaret Portis in the 1870 census that would help me
further along my search, I would greatly appreciate it,

Sincerely,
Jovon Johnson

I don't know of any other Portis' but York is located in Sumter Co. There may be some connection there. I do know that my 3rd great-grandmother, Margaret Portis, lived with her daughter, Emma Brown, and son-in-law, Amos Brown, in Sumter Co. according to the 1910 Federal Census. My oldest living relative is her great-grand daughter. She does not know whether Portis was Margaret's given name or married name. The only thing we do know is she was a former mulatto slave and evidently had been sold at least once and that she was not originally from the Sumter county area. We also know that she died after the beginning of WWII approximately 1942 or 1943. I hope this helps.

Hi Jovon,

My name is Zelda. I have Clarke, Suggsville, Alabama connections. I I just read your post this morning and looking at the date you may have answers regarding your Margaret Portis. It's my belief that it more likely than not that Portis was the surname of the slave owner. My 2x great grandmother Margaret Johnson is also on the 1870 census and lived in close proximity of your Margaret.

In my research I met a great niece of John Wesley. She is a wealth of knowledge of the Portis family. John Wesley also had brothers who were in the surrounding counties including Sumter. She also has papers and pictures. In a discussion we had it was her belief that the children of Johanna Portis on the 1870 census were direct Portis descendants with John Wesley possibly their birth father.
