Jean Fairchild Gilmore has done many, many years of research on the Fairchild family, all by hand and traveling all over the country. She published two books, "Early Fairchilds in America" and "More Fairchilds in America" and information from these books are used for most of which you find on rootsweb and ancestry family trees regarding the Fairchild family.

In "Early Fairchilds in America" she writes: "Jesse Fairchild was a blacksmith in the town of Pequannock, Morris Country NJ 29 June 1763, is most probably Abraham's son. Martin Vanduyn, Jr. was of the same place when both paid 11 pounds for land in the town of Pequannock. Jesse is ont he Morris county deeds until at least 1787. He may be the Jesse on the 1810 Pensylvania census in Luzerne county. John Fairchild is there and could be a brother of Jesse, both sons of Abraham by different wives and both from New Jersey. The 1820 Pennsylvania census has a Jesse in Venango county, town of Allegheny, over age 45 and alone. Note that the wife of John in Luzerne county was May Van Dine/Dyne." This is found on page 97. On page 565, it says: " John Fairchild b. 9 Feb 1753 (source is National Genealogical Society Quarterly, 59:201)Other dates of birth given by descendants are 7 Feb 1753 and 2 Jul 1753. He died 29 Apr 1824 in Newport Twp., Luzerne Co. PA and is buried in Old Newport cemetery, outside of Nanticoke, PA (source is cemetery records). He married Mary Van Dine (source is Research of Vida Fairchild, Pensylvania Fairchild Family Association), born 3 Sep 1752 (source is gravestone inscription) probably in NJ. Other birthdates given by descendatns are 2 Apr 1752 and 29 Apr 1752, she was the daughter of Martin Van Dine/Van Duyn and she died 17 Jan 1831 and is buried in the same cemetery as John. Their children were: 1. John, aka "Barney" John b. probably in NJ d. in Newport Twp, Luzerne Co. PA. He married Margaret "Peggy" Payne (source research of Vida Fairchild) who was born ca 1784 in PA. In 1850 she was living with her son, Peter. 2. Abraham/Abram was born 14 Mar 1776 (source Vida Fairchild research) prob. NJ and prob. died between 1840 and 1850 in OH as he is not on the 1850 census. He married first Mary b. 7 Oct 1795 (Vida Fairchild research)who was also married to a Stewart; then Abraham married second another Mary. 3. Peter b. 25 Aug 1781 in Newport Twp, Luzerne Co. PA died 28 Jan 1825 in Basil, OH (Vida Fairchild research). He married Ann Smith b. 19 Aug 1784 in PA and d. 10 Nov 1871 (Vida Fairchild research; Census records. Peter went to Ohio and settled on a farm in 1806. It was at that time a dense forest and Peter cleared 160 acres. (source History of Fairfield and Perry Counties Ohio, published in 1883). After his death, there was an estate sale at which Ann bought back a number of items. Later in life she lived with son William. 4. Solomon b. 17 Oct 1783 (National Genealogical Society Quarterly 59:201) in Luzerne Co. PA and d. 16 Sep 1854 (same source)Luzerne Co. PA and buried in Newport Cemetery. He married Elizabeth Lutsey 19 Jan 1806 (source Spear, Eunice Fairchild, book The Family of Fairchild). She b. 23 May 1789 PA(Vida Fairchild; Census records) daughter of Col. John and Elizabeth (Gilbert) Lutsey. She d. 26 Jul 1871 (National Genealogical Society Quarterly 59:201) and is buried in Newport Cemetery." (Note: There is a picture of Solomon Fairchild on p. 569 of this book). Related to these families (Grandchildren of John) are also pictures of Ziba A. Fairchild and Edwin Fairchild and his bride, Mariah Shafer. There is more information on the purported relationship of John and the Van Duyn's, which mentions John came to PA after the Wyoming massacre of 1778. Write me if you want more of that.

In Jean's second book, she seems to rethink some of the information on John and on page 152, says: Following are the children of John and Mary (Van Dine) Fairchild of Luzerne Co. PA. After much thought and consideration, this complier decided to bring this family from pages 565-570 in complier's first book and place them as descendants of Abraham and his second wife, Hannah, of Hanover Twp, Morris Co. NJ. There are too many coincidences present not to do this. The Reformed Dutch Church of Pompton Plains, located in the northeastern part of Morris Co. NJ gives the birth of Marytje, daughter of Marte and Doortis Van Duyn, as 27 Dec 1757 and baptised 5 Feb 1758. Bill Burnett of Topsfield, MA did the New Jersey research on church records. Abrham died 27 Sep 1754 in Hanover, NJ according to the intestate proate record, unfortunately naming only wife Hannah (then she says see page 35 and 36 for further discussion of Abraham). Jesse Fairchild, probably step brother of John, is discussed on page 97 of the first book. He and Martin Van Duyne, Jr. each paid 11 pounds for land in town of Pequannock, Morris Co. Jesse and John are both in Luzerne Co. PA in 1810. John, son of John of Luzern Co. was baptised 23 Aug 1779 according to the records of the Reforme Dutch Church of Pompton Plains NJ so there is proof that John and Mary (Van Dine) were in NJ before going to Luzerne Co. PA after the Wyoming Massacre of 1778. Abrham, first son of John and Mary, was b. 14 Mar 1776 in NJ. Plume (refers to the Genealogy of Fairchild Family manuscript written by Walter Beach Plume and on file at the Salt Lake Mormon Library)states that John went to PA with his wie and two sons. Peter and Solomon are the other two sons of John and Mary. Note the use of male names of children of John and those of the children of his uncle Samuel Fairchild of Hanover, NJ.

I hope this is helpful to all of you. There is more information on the children of John and Mary and I can scan those pages for those interested. It's best to e-mail me directly at
