Christine, how exciting! I had just taken a notion to log on after a very long break from searching and couldn't believe your message!
Ellen was the reason I started my search about 8 years ago. The story was that my grandmother Betty Churchward was born in Torquay, Devon, England in 1920, the oldest of 6/7 children and she went stay with her grandmother as a child when her mother was expecting her 2nd child. Sometime later her grandmother Ellen wouldn't let her go and kept her. Betty's parents living in the same street went on to have more of a family and Betty continued to live with Ellen. Her parents moved away to Plymouth, Devon and she lost contact with them. My gran often spoke of her "Spanish Witch" of a grandmother...but I could not find any proof that she was Spanish! Perhaps she just had spanish descendants but her family is traced back to Jersey...I couldn't find anything further. As my gran's family moved away and had very little/no contact with Ellen, they couldn't confirm the Spanish story. However, Gran was brought up with Ellen, William and her daughter Edith Florence. She married Percival Norman Golledge. They were known as Aunt Flo and Uncle Percy. Does this ring a bell with your dad? Who were your father's parents?
Your father would be my gran's cousin. There is only one surviving Churchward on my gran's line (Irene Churchward), you'll see her on my tree.
Although I cannot confirm the Spanish link, I know there is something there...my gran, dad, myself and my boys are very dark skinned with dark hair. Also my dad's cousins have confirmed a sickle cell trait, which suggests a Med-iterranean or North African ancestry! All very interesting!!
Sorry if this is lots to take in...here is my email address: firstname.lastname@example.org
and we can correspond further.
I also have a photograph of Ellen and William somewhere, Aunt Flo and Uncle Percy. I can look it out and scan it for you.
