NSW Certificates of Naturalization

Jewish Family History Collection LaunchAncestry.com.au is pleased to announce the latest collection addition to the site: NSW Certificates of Naturalization (1849-1903). These records are a good source of information for tracing details of an immigrant ancestor’s arrival and native place of birth.

Certificates of Naturalization were required by any person born outside the British Empire who wished to vote or purchase land. Applications for Naturalization generally provided full name, native place, occupation, age, and the date and ship of arrival. Those applying were generally men, from places such as China, USA, or the various countries of Europe or South America. Please note that persons born in New Zealand, Canada, Ireland etc, already being British subjects, will not be found in this collection.

UK City and Country Directories

Another recent addition to the site is the UK City and County Directories. They contain a huge amount of information about towns and villages in the UK from 1677 – 1946. They list all sorts of people who had trades, not just business and shop owners, but ordinary people such as gardeners, dressmakers and even chimney sweeps. It is estimated that there are at least 7.8 million searchable names on record, including some rather well known names too, such as Charles Dickens, as well as former British Prime Ministers Benjamin Disraeli and William Gladstone. This database is a collection of directories for various areas of the United Kingdom. Various types of directories exist, including:

  • Street: listing of residents, businesses, and tradesmen according to street address
  • Commercial: includes businesses, but may also include private residences; generally an alphabetical listing of traders
  • Trade: not just for businesses, but anyone with a recognized trade or profession; an alphabetical listing of trades and businesses
  • Court: lists wealthy residents and government officials
  • Post Office: listing of householder's names and addresses
Directories are an excellent source for gathering details to help you place your ancestors in historical context. Because most directories provided descriptions and other information about the town and surrounding localities, directories can help you paint a picture of what life in that time and place might have actually been like.
