Also know as the “Red Books”, Walch’s Tasmanian Almanac contains 100,000 historical names and offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of Tasmanians up to 140 years ago. The red covered books were produced annually in Hobart by J. Walch and Sons from 1863 until 1980. Each edition includes information such as resident listings including occupation, details of services in each town as well as obituaries from the previous year’s newspapers.

Recent collections from the UK

Oxford Alumni (1500-1886)Oxford Alumni (1500-1886)
This database contains a register of students, graduates, and officers who attended Oxford University between 1500 and 1886. This work is valuable because of the biographical information provided about each individual. Such information includes parentage, birthplace, birth year, date and age of matriculation, and degree obtained. This database may also be valuable to researchers of social history as items such as descriptions of the social status of the students' fathers are also included.

Royal Irish Constabulary (1816-1921)
The Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) was created in 1816, and initially staffed mainly by Irish-born men. However, toward the 1900s, and especially afterwards, the RIC recruited men from countries such as England, Scotland, Wales, and the United States. The records of the RIC were only indexed annually by the date of enlistment. Until this database was created, the only way to identify whether an ancestor joined the forces was an extremely time-consuming search. Some people joined for a few days or weeks, others stayed for years, and quite a few migrated. There are mentions in the index on whether a person emigrated, died, or married.

This index is a work in progress. This latest update adds another 11,074 records to the previous 58,433 records.

England & Wales Marriages (1538-1940)England & Wales Marriages (1538-1940)

The records included in this database do not represent all localities in England and Wales and for any given area, coverage (both records within a year and total year range) may not be complete. Some parishes and counties are more complete than others.

England & Wales Christening Records (1530-1906)
This database contains information extracted from birth and christening records from various counties in England and Wales. The records date from 1530 to 1906. The records included in this database do not represent all localities in England and Wales and for any given area, coverage (both records within a year and total year range) may not be complete. Some parishes and counties are more complete than others.
